The First Adventure at Sea
I was born in 1632, in York. My father was a foreignerfrom Bremen, Germany. He f irst moved to Hull forbusiness then went to York. He got married there. I hadtwo elder brothers, so I was the youngest in the family.
Both of my brothers were killed and I was the only childleft. My parents were very old and they sent me to apublic school in the country. I didn't like the school. Seawas the only thing that made me happy. My father was awise man who was very worried about my new interest.
I wanted to leave my father's house and sail away. Myold man thought it was not such a good idea to leavemy native country.
